Description
Forensic Identification investigators possess knowledge, skills, experiences, training and/or education that help provide scientific, technical or other specialized opinions which will help the trier of fact to understand the evidence or to determine the fact in issue. As such, expert witnesses are an integral part of investigative and prosecution teams.
This course is designed to ensure participants have an understanding of the legal requirements of expert evidence pertaining to the Criminal Code, and be able to produce a proper curriculum vita and Opinion Report with respect to their area of expertise.

Learning outcomes
- Ability to list the roles and responsibilities of an expert witness as it relates to investigations, prosecutions and the courts;
- Ability to draft a CV relevant to their expertise;
- Ability to demonstrate understanding of the principles governing the defence of a CV and be able to verbally articulate it while testifying in court; and
- Ability to demonstrate understanding of the principles governing the defence of their opinion evidence and be able to verbally articulate it while testifying in court.
Eligibility and mandatory requirements
- Potential participants for this course must be full time scenes of crime examiners from an accredited police agency.
- Registrants must have successfully completed CPC's forensic identification course, or an equivalent.
Assessment
Various evaluation methods are used such as; a pre-course assignment, participation in a mock trial and a final written exam.
