Description
Major Case Management is unlike the management of criminal investigations that are routinely encountered by experienced investigators. The scope and complexity of major cases build on this type of experience but requires other analytical skills and knowledge. This course is designed to prepare experienced investigators for the management challenges that are inherent in major cases. Participants on this course acquire the analytical, legal and managerial knowledge and skills to manage major cases.

Learning outcomes
- Knowledge of critical thinking methodology.
- Understanding how to acquire and manage human, financial and material resources needed to conduct a planned investigation.
- Ability to manage a multi-agency or multi-jurisdictional major case investigation.
- Understanding how to involve prosecutors
- in the development of an investigational plan
- in the delivery of legal and strategic advice throughout the investigation
- Knowledge of major case management principles.
- Ability to present a major case management submission to a Joint Management Team.
Eligibility and mandatory requirements
- This course is offered to law enforcement officers in the role of a team commander responsible for major investigation cases. Military police and CBSA officers may also apply.
- Registrants must submit a letter of support from their line officer.
- Registrants must have completed one of the following:
- Financial Investigations Course (FINANC)
- Organized Crime Course (OCC)
- Major Crime Investigative Techniques Course (MCITC)
- Drug Investigative Techniques Course (DITC)
- In exceptional cases, the CPC will consider participants who have not completed a prerequisite course but who have a recommendation from their line officer.
- or an equivalent certificate from another educational institution recognized by the CPC.
- Acceptance or refusal in the course is at the discretion of the Canadian Police College.
Assessment
- Success in the course is based on participation and completion of all required assignments.
- Various evaluation methods are used, including a business plan and a presentation.
- Re-testing or re-evaluation is conducted at the discretion of the course instructor.
