Description
This comprehensive five-day course is designed to equip police leaders with the knowledge, skills, and strategies necessary to foster inclusivity within their organizations. Through a series of interactive sessions, participants will explore the principles of inclusive leadership, develop cultural competence, learn to identify and address unconscious bias, create inclusive policies and procedures, and promote diversity and equity in recruitment and retention. The course aims to create real impact by addressing real issues in Canadian policing through real talk and practical application.

Learning outcomes
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the importance of inclusive leadership in policing
- articulate the significance of inclusive leadership in the context of Canadian law enforcement
- recognize the current landscape of diversity and inclusion in policing
- analyze case studies to identify successful models of inclusive leadership
- Foster a culture of inclusivity within police organizations
- define the role and responsibilities of police leaders in promoting inclusivity
- identify challenges and opportunities for inclusive leadership in Canadian policing
- reflect on personal experiences and challenges through group discussions and activities
- Develop cultural competence
- define cultural competence and its importance in policing
- implement strategies to enhance cultural awareness within police teams
- practice culturally sensitive leadership through role-playing scenarios
- Identify and address unconscious bias
- understand the concept of unconscious bias and its impact on decision-making in law enforcement
- apply techniques to recognize and mitigate unconscious bias in policing
- engage in practical exercises to identify and challenge personal biases
- Create and implement inclusive policies and procedures
- analyze existing policies and procedures in Canadian policing for inclusivity
- develop and revise policies to ensure they are inclusive
- learn from guest speakers and case studies about successful implementation of inclusive practices
- Promote diversity and equity in recruitment and retention
- analyze the current state of diversity in law enforcement recruitment
- develop strategies to attract a diverse pool of candidates
- explore inclusive hiring practices and support programs for the retention and advancement of diverse officers
- Apply inclusive leadership in conflict resolution and decision-making
- understand the role of inclusive leadership in conflict resolution
- practice inclusive decision-making through case studies and role-playing exercises
- discuss real-world scenarios and best practices in group discussions
- Showcase understanding and application of inclusive leadership
- participate in simulated scenarios to demonstrate inclusive leadership skills
- gain insights from senior police leaders through guest speaker sessions
- celebrate course completion with a closing ceremony and distribution of certificates
Eligibility and mandatory requirements
- This program is offered to managers, senior managers, and executives of law enforcement and government agencies
- Applications must include a short (maximum of one page) letter stating why the applicant would benefit from the course
- Applications must include a letter of support from the applicant's manager
- Acceptance or refusal in the program is at the discretion of the Canadian Police College
Assessment
- Participation in all activities
- Re-testing or re-evaluation is conducted at the discretion of the program instructor
